What Hungary is celebrating
August 20 is Hungary’s national celebration of St. Stephen, the country’s first king, and the state-founding legacy that connected Hungary to Christian Europe. The 2026 program uses the theme “Together in Europe for a Thousand Years.”
For a visitor, the best way to join is to experience more than the night show. The day combines national ceremony, sacred tradition, folk culture, Hungarian food and contemporary music. Outdoor programs are free, although popular locations remain subject to capacity limits.
At Kossuth Square, the flag raising and officer commissioning are scheduled from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., followed by the air show from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Parliament is open from noon until 8:00 p.m. without advance registration, but expect lines and security controls.
The Street of Hungarian Flavors runs from 9:00 a.m. until midnight, while the Festival of Folk Arts in the Castle District is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Holy Right procession around St. Stephen’s Basilica is scheduled from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The 9 p.m. Danube show: what you will actually see
The official program calls the main production “Fire and Lights Play.” It begins at 9:00 p.m. and lasts 30 minutes. The show combines projected images on major Budapest landmarks, music, architectural lighting, lasers, a drone sequence and pyrotechnics. The fireworks are the approximately ten-minute closing movement—not a separate 30-minute fireworks display.
Organizers recommend watching from the Buda side between Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge. This is a broad public corridor, not a reserved zone, and a clear view is never guaranteed. Arrive at least an hour early, keep your group together and choose a landmark away from the most compressed pedestrian flow.
If you miss the full production, the current official program lists a light-and-projection repeat from 10:00 to 10:30 p.m. without presenting it as another fireworks and drone show. Decorative lighting on Parliament and Chain Bridge then continues from 10:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m.

Budapest August 20 closures that change your route
The central restriction zone reaches far beyond one waterfront street. It affects the downtown area between Margaret Bridge, the inner boulevards, Liberty Bridge, the Buda embankment and Margit Boulevard. Upper and lower embankments, bridge approaches and nearby streets may be controlled before, during and after the show.
A reserved car does not override a barrier. Do not tell a driver only “pick us up near the fireworks.” Give an exact street address, a reachable phone number and a backup point outside the controlled core.

Carry less, move easier
What to carry—and how to get home
Travel light. The organizer provides no cloakroom or luggage storage, and backpacks may not exceed A3 size, approximately 30 by 42 centimeters. Glass, metal cans, outside alcohol, drones and personal pyrotechnics are prohibited. The published drink allowance is a plastic bottle up to 0.5 liter or a resealable non-glass water bottle.
Public transit is often the most reliable way through the pedestrianized inner zone. BKK currently plans to run metro lines M2, M3 and M4 until about 2:30 a.m. Tram 6 will operate more frequently throughout the night, and bus 26 is scheduled to serve Margaret Island until about 2:00 a.m. Routes may be shortened or redirected, so use BudapestGO instead of an old screenshot.
For visitors with reduced mobility, the organizer says most venues are accessible and specifically points to M4 and low-floor trams for the Műegyetem area. Still verify the final route on the day because temporary barriers and crowd density can affect the practical approach.
