Budapest is used to major sport. This weekend is different.
September 11–13 brings two international fields to Budapest on exactly the same three days. For visitors, the useful question is no longer simply how to reach one stadium. It is how to move athletes, sponsors, executives, families and supporter groups through Budapest Airport, several hotels and two live event schedules without treating every journey as a separate booking.
At the Gyula Zsivotzky National Athletics Centre, the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship will close the outdoor track-and-field season. At a Budapest venue still to be announced by the International Judo Federation, the Hungary Grand Slam will run a full three-day IJF World Tour program.
A new global finale
What is the World Athletics Ultimate Championship?
The Ultimate Championship is not a renamed world championships. It is a new, biennial finale designed to put Olympic champions, world champions, Diamond League winners and the season’s leading performers into a short, high-pressure format.
According to the official World Athletics overview, the first edition brings the action into three evening sessions. The program contains 28 events: 26 individual contests and two mixed relays. There are no conventional heats. Selected track events move from semifinals to finals, while field events, the 1500m, 5000m and relays go straight to the decisive round.
That compression changes the atmosphere. Friday is already a finals night; there is no quiet opening day. The current official session schedule runs from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. on September 11 and from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on September 12 and 13. The organizer marks the timetable as subject to change, so pickup times should be built from the latest program rather than copied once and forgotten.
The financial scale is equally new. World Athletics has set a $10 million prize fund, which it describes as the largest ever offered at a single track-and-field event. Individual champions receive $150,000. Demand has also changed the venue plan: 7,000 temporary seats were added, taking announced capacity to 21,000 spectators per session.
Who is coming to Budapest?
The complete field is not final at the time of writing. The qualification system still includes 2026 results and late-season places. An early-August preview should not turn a live road to Budapest into a finished start list.
World Athletics has confirmed all five headline competitors above. Usain Bolt is also expected in Budapest in his promotional role as the event’s Ultimate Legend. He is not returning as a competitor. The same September dates
The Hungary Grand Slam brings the IJF World Tour to Budapest
The official IJF event registry lists the Hungary Grand Slam 2026 in Budapest across September 11–13, with all 14 senior Olympic weight categories.
The lighter divisions open the competition on Friday: men’s -60kg and -66kg, and women’s -48kg, -52kg and -57kg. Saturday moves through men’s -73kg and -81kg and women’s -63kg and -70kg. The heavier categories conclude the event on Sunday.
The entry list is still moving. At the August 3 research lock, IJF displayed 149 competitors from 26 countries across six continents. The live list of entered judoka included Muhiddin Asadulloev, Nurali Emomali, Patricia Sampaio and Jorge Fonseca, among others. Registrations can change before competition, so these names are a dated snapshot, not a promise of the final draw.
