Why are Ferencváros in the Europa League?

Fradi qualified by winning the 2025/26 Hungarian Cup. The final against Zalaegerszeg remained goalless through 90 minutes before Toon Raemaekers struck in the 111th minute, delivering a 1–0 victory and the club’s 25th Hungarian Cup title. The trophy also placed Ferencváros in the 2026/27 Europa League qualifying route.

That distinction matters. Ferencváros are not in Champions League qualifying this summer; Hungary’s league champions, Győri ETO, took the Champions League place. Fradi’s European route begins in the Europa League, with the Conference League acting as a safety net at certain later stages of qualifying.

The club also carries recent European momentum. Ferencváros reached the Europa League round of 16 in 2025/26, a campaign covered in our 2025/26 Ferencváros Europa League season hub and the Braga round-of-16 match report.

Ferencváros 2–2 Twente: a qualification earned with ten men

The return leg against Twente had everything a European night in Budapest is supposed to have: early control, a costly dismissal, a second-half surge and a tense finish under the Groupama Aréna floodlights.

Fradi arrived home with a 2–1 lead from the Netherlands. Toon Raemaekers converted a penalty in the 22nd minute to make it 1–0 on the night and 3–1 on aggregate. The balance changed sharply in the 36th minute when Philippe Rommens was shown a red card, leaving Ferencváros to protect the tie with ten players for the remainder of the match.

Instead of retreating immediately, Fradi struck again. Lenny Joseph scored in the 50th minute, moving the aggregate score to 4–1 and putting the Hungarian side within reach of the next round. Twente then produced a late response: Wout Weghorst scored in the 82nd minute and Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink followed in the 86th.

The final minutes became an exercise in resilience. Twente needed one more goal to force extra time, but Ferencváros held on. The 2–2 draw was enough for a 4–3 aggregate victory — and a qualification that will be remembered less for comfort than for character.

Ferencváros 1–0 Górnik Zabrze: Corbu earns a first-leg edge

Ferencváros earned a narrow but deserved advantage at Groupama Aréna on 5 August. The opening half was cautious in extreme heat, with neither side registering a shot on target. Fradi produced the clearer early chance, but Lenny Joseph fired wide from close range.

The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute. Cadu found Corbu Máriusz outside the penalty area; the midfielder shifted the ball past his marker and drove a low right-footed finish into the bottom-left corner. Ferencváros remained proactive after taking the lead and protected the clean sheet through the closing stages.

The tie remains open. Fradi take a 1–0 lead to Zabrze for the second leg on 13 August at 19:00 CEST. The winner will face Trabzonspor in the Europa League play-off round; the loser will move into the Conference League play-offs against AS Monaco. Hungarian teams in the UEFA Conference League

Ferencváros are the main Hungarian story in the Europa League, but the broader European picture now includes two other Hungarian teams still alive in Conference League qualifying. Paks have been eliminated, while Győr and Debrecen move on to high-profile third-round ties.

Győri ETO: from Champions League qualifying to a 7–3 Conference League win

As Hungarian champions, Győri ETO began in the Champions League. A 3–2 aggregate defeat to Víkingur Reykjavík moved the team into the Conference League champions path, where Luxembourg’s Atert Bissen awaited.

Győr took decisive control with a 6–2 away victory. The 1–1 draw in the return leg completed a comfortable 7–3 aggregate success. Riga FC are next, with the two legs scheduled for 6 and 13 August. Riga eliminated Vardar after an extraordinary tie that required extra time, so ETO’s next round should represent a significant step up.

Debreceni VSC: one goal, two clean sheets, one major reward

Debrecen’s tie against Pyunik was far tighter. DVSC won the first leg 1–0 at home and then protected that advantage with a 0–0 draw in Armenia. Across 180 minutes, a single goal separated the teams — but Debrecen’s two clean sheets proved enough.

The reward is one of the most demanding pairings available: FC Copenhagen. The Danish club drew 3–3 with Polissya in the first leg and won the return 2–1, progressing 5–4 on aggregate. Debrecen will enter as the outsider, but their defensive performance against Pyunik gives them a clear foundation for the next challenge.

Paksi FC: eliminated after pushing Panathinaikos all the way

Paks entered the return leg in Athens trailing 2–1, but refused to let the tie drift away. The Hungarian side scored twice and drew 2–2 on the night. Panathinaikos, however, progressed 4–3 on aggregate.

Elimination ends Paks’ 2026/27 European campaign, but the margin matters: they remained competitive against one of the most recognisable clubs in the Conference League qualifying field and were only one goal from forcing extra time.

How the Europa League and Conference League qualifying paths connect

UEFA qualifying can look confusing because a club may begin in one competition and continue in another after losing. The simplest way to understand the current Hungarian routes is:

  1. Domestic performance decides the starting competition. Győr entered the Champions League as Hungarian champions; Ferencváros entered the Europa League as cup winners; Debrecen and Paks entered the Conference League.
  2. Champions League losers can drop into another competition. Győr’s defeat to Víkingur moved ETO into the Conference League rather than ending the European season.
  3. Europa League qualifying also offers a later safety net. A defeat for Fradi against Górnik would move Ferencváros into the Conference League play-offs.
  4. Direct Conference League defeats normally mean elimination. That is why Paks’ defeat to Panathinaikos ends their run.
  5. The goal is the league phase. Qualifying-round and play-off winners eventually join the 36-team league phase of the relevant competition.

Planning a Ferencváros matchday in Budapest

Groupama Aréna stands on Üllői út in Budapest’s ninth district, close to Népliget. The metro and tram network makes the stadium accessible, but European match nights bring concentrated crowds, road restrictions and heavy demand before and after the final whistle.

For visitors, the most practical plan is to separate three questions: ticketing, stadium arrival and the return journey. Match tickets must be arranged through official club channels. Transport should then be timed around the published kick-off and any security or entry requirements communicated by the organiser.

A private transfer is especially useful for airport arrivals, families, corporate guests and groups who need a fixed meeting point after the match. It can also connect the stadium with central Budapest hotels, restaurants or onward travel without relying on last-minute vehicle availability.
